Fort Lauderdale is the city of Florida, along the North Atlantic Ocean. Estimated population of the city
is about 185,000. It is the principal city of the South Florida metropolitan area, which is the home of
the 5,500,000 inhabitant.
The city is a popular tourist destination, with 10.35 million visitors in 2006. It is known as the "Venice
of America"because of its expansive and intricate canal system. The city is a major yachting center,
which allows 42,000 resident yachts and 100 marinas and boatyards. It is located 37 kms north of Miami city.
Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding area host over 4100 restaurants and 120 nightclubs.

Many canals are dug on the inside of the sand waves of the Atlantic Ocean. At its surroundings, elegant luxury
homes lined up its surroundings. A sailing to the open sea in private cruise ship from the home is rather common;
some people live like envy. More than 350 vessels of the cruiser are in FortLauderdale. Here is the Marin of leading
in Flarida.

It takes over an hour from Miami to Fort Lauderdale on Route A1A. There is a different atmosphere
from Miami at this town. We will see many a swim-wearing attractive women walking on a street during
the day. The beach is wide and clean, because it is well maintained. Before twilight, people gather around
a restaurant, and enjoy dinner, under a pleasant fresh breeze from the sea.

Many restaurant/bars have an outside terrace seat, at which smoking is allowed.

Sheraton Yankee Clipper Hotel Fort Lauderdale still has 26 smoking rooms ( 5% to total ), against the proposal
in which Starwood has expanded its smoke-free initiative to all Sheraton hotels in the United States.
All guest rooms in this hotel are in 2013 smoke-free.
Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale. All facilities are entirely smoke-free.

大洋と運河の都市、フォート・ローダデール 大西洋の波が押し寄せる砂浜の内側には多くの運河が掘られて
おり、その周辺には瀟洒な高級住宅が建ち並ぶ。自宅から自家用クルーズ船で外洋に航行することは普通で、
うらやましいような生活を送る者もいる。フォート・ローダデールには３５０隻以上ものクルーザーが停泊、
カリブ海周遊の大型客船の発着港でもあり、フロリダ有数のマリーナがここにある。
多くの日本人は「マイアミ」の名前は知っているが、「フォート・ローダデール」を知るものは少ない。マイアミ
からルートＡ１Ａを北上すると小一時間でこの町に着く。マイアミとはひと味違った雰囲気があり、昼間は多くの
水着美人が歩行している。砂浜は広く、きれいに整備されているので快適だ。夕日が沈みかけるとレストラン街が
賑やかになり、人々は海からのさわやかな風を浴びて食を楽しむ。
ビーチバレーも盛んなようで、コートの数も多い。整備されたバスケットコート、公園もある。海辺でスポーツ
しながら人生を楽しむことの出来る街、それがフォート・ローダデールだ。
宿泊したSheraton Yankee Clipper Hotel では喫煙ルームを26部屋用意している。総客室数は500なので、その5％
ほどに相当する。これは全米で喫煙客室をなくするというシェラトンホテルの方針に反するのではないかとの問いに
対し、現在検討中との答えが戻ってきた。
フォート・ローダデールのマリオットホテルは奥まった閑静な地域にある。ホテルロビー、レストランなどで
喫煙しないように禁煙標識を必ず目につきやすい場所に掲示してある。宿泊客、会議出席者がタバコ有害煙を
吸って健康障害を引き起こさないよう、不快な思いをしないように常に配慮している。
フォート・ローダデールをルートＡ１Ａに沿って北上して行くと次に、Pompano Beach の街に出る。マイアミを含め、
南東フロリダ地方は、夏には激しい雷雨があるが、夏の終わりにはハリケーンに襲われることもある。湿気が多く
暑いところであるが、海風のある浜辺の近くは過ごしやすい。
