Palermo is a historic city and the capital of Sicily. The city is noted for its rich history, culture and architecture,
playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years. The Teatro Massimo
was opened in 1897. It is the biggest theater in Italy and the third-largest in Europe. In the Vucciria
in the heart of Palermo's historic old city, vendors set out crates of a bunch of fishes, fruits and vegetables
in the early morning. This place is always crowded with many shoppers, and tourists. It's a tradition that's
gone on, more or less the same way, for the last 700 years.

パレルモ・・アラブの影響が強いシチリア第一の都市

シチリア島（シシリア島）最大の都市、パレルモ。昼間の喧噪に包まれていた街も夕闇が迫ると黒く不気味に静まり
かえる。しかし、朝日は人々と街に全く違った生命を与える。市場には巨大なナスやカボチャなど野菜がうず高く積まれ
新鮮な魚が屋台に並ぶ。古びた街のベランダは洗濯物のオンパレードだ。人は非常にフレンドリーだ。メインロードは
渋滞した車で混雑しているが、一歩小路にに入ると鳥の声がこだまし嘘のように静かな世界に変貌する。

「ゴットファザー３」のクライマックスシーン、アル・パチーノ演ずる悲劇の舞台がマツシモ劇場前の大階段である。
午前中の時間を中心にイタリア語と英語とのガイドを催しているが一見の価値はある。ただ、ガイド案内切符が手書き
とは恐れ入った。

[パレルモ→アグリジェント]　シチリア島を縦断する鉄道の旅

パレルモセントラレ駅からアグリジェントまでは快速電車で２時間の旅である。シチリア島（シシリア島）の中央を
縦断する路線である。はじめ海岸沿いを走っていた電車はやがて丘陵地帯に入って行く。上り坂であるが意外にスピード
は落ちることなく、ぐんぐん高度を高める。しかし、島の中心に高い山はなく羊の放牧地をすぎると果実園や草原が
広がりどこまでも続く。マフィアのボス、ドン・ビトーの出身地、コルレオーネ村はこの路線よりやや西側にあるが、
こうした丘陵地帯の一角で生まれ育ったのであろうとの想いを巡らせながら移り変わる車窓からの景色を楽しむ。
