The Island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island, is a volcanic island in the State of Hawaii in the North
Pacific Ocean. The area of the island is 10,432 square kms..It is larger than all other Hawaiian Islands
combined and is the largest island in the United States.

The National Park was established in 1916. It displays the results of hundreds of thousands of years of
volcanism, migration and evolution.

The Nene is a land bird and a variety of the Hawaiian Goose. It is adopted itself to life in the harsh lava
country.They are protected by law established in 1949. Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, dance,
volcanoes and violence. Her domain encompasses all volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: A cold solidified lava flow field extends to the horizon. The Chain of Craters Road runs
along the cooled lava flow plateau to the sea; however, road buried by lava flows down to the coast, and no further
access is available from that point.

筆者が訪れたときハワイ島のオーシャン・エントリーには溶岩の海面への流入もなく、水蒸気噴煙を見ることが出来なかった。
どうもいつも観察出来るものではないようで、運がよくなければ駄目なようだ。そこでＮＨＫが真っ暗な夜中に超高感度カメラで
撮影した真っ赤な溶岩の流れと噴煙のテレビ画像を紹介する。
ハワイ火山国立公園、キラウエア・カルデラを眺望できるVolcano House （ホテル）は全室禁煙である。近くのボルケーノ
ビレッジに掲示されていた標識には次のように記載されている。「禁煙地域」「喫煙は建物出入口、開閉窓、換気吸入口の
20フィート（6.1メーター）以内で禁止」「タバコから解き放された島、ハワイ島」・・ Big Islandとはハワイ島のこと。

Tobacco-Free Big Island
The Black Sand Beach located in the southeastern coast of the Island of Hawaii. It is called as the Punalu'u Beach. A black
sand was made of basalt and created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools.
The volcanic activity in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park frequently endangered a sea turtle, which can often be seen
basking on the Black Sand Beach.

Smoking Restriction at Hotels in the World: Actual Survey
The ratio of a smoking guest room to the total hotel rooms was calculated,
based on the on-the-spot investigation.
ハワイ州ハワイ島 ハワイ島の気候は島の東西で著しい違いを見せる。年間降雨量はヒロで3200以上、
コナで3100ミリ以上、ハワイ火山国立公園で2700ミリ以上に達するが、一流リゾートホテルが立ち並ぶ北西海岸
一帯は230ミリと非常に少なく、晴天の日が続く。温暖な気候に恵まれたこの地では、都会の喧噪もなく、静かに、
ゆっくりと時が流れて行く。
ハワイ島喫煙規制ハワイ島 ヒルトンワイコロアビレッジヒルトンホテルは1988年に建造され、運河あり、
モノレールあり、プールには洞窟、吊り橋までかかる巨大レゾートである。1240のホテル客室内は全室禁煙であり、
Ocean Tower 最上階のバルコニー部分でのみで喫煙を許している。喫煙所はA（Oceanview terrace ),
B ( Weddingi pavillionl脇）、C（正面入口から20フィート以上離れた地域）の３カ所ある。しかし、許可されている
場所でもそばを通行する人々は受動喫煙の被害を受けやすい。上記場所以外は、屋外を含めて全面禁煙であるが、
喫煙の許されていない場所で堂々とタバコを吸うゲストもいる。なお敷地内に禁煙標識はない。
ハワイ火山国立公園 周囲12キロのキラウェア・カウデラ（Kiluauea Caldera )は60キロメートルにも及ぶが、
広大なハワイ火山国立公園の一部に過ぎない。荒涼とした冷たく固まった溶岩流の平面に立つと、人間とはいかに
小さな存在かよく分かる。
ハワイ島、カイルア・コナは風情ある港町である。カメハメハ大王ゆかりの地でもある。ここのコナビーチホテルに
宿泊したが、ネット予約システムが作動していないので日本のホテル代理店で予約、「non-smoking room 」との
確約書を持参し、チェックインしたのだが、薄汚れた壁紙の部屋に通された。「ハワイの心を守る名門ホテル」と
紹介されていたので、時代物のホテルでは仕方ないとも思ったが、部屋の中とバルコニーに灰皿を見つけ、「予約と
違うではないか」とフロントに苦情を申し入れた。係員は予約内容の確認を怠り、私が日本人なので喫煙ルーム希望か
と思い違いがあったのだと思う。「どんなに追加料金を払っても喫煙ルームを確保してくれと」いうリクエストもある
と聞いてはいたが、むしろサービスのつもりの対応だったのかも知れない。筆者が強く抗議したため、フロント係は
すぐにベルボーイを呼び、最上階、６階の禁煙フロアに部屋替えを行い、やっと落ち着いた。改めて認識したことは
壁紙のくすみがなく、色が明るく、その違いが歴然としていたこと、そして部屋に漂う独特の悪臭がないことだ。
このホテルでは４階全部が喫煙フロアであり、喫煙ルームの全客室への割合は25％である。

ハワイ島では、2008年4月より、屋外であっても州政府が管理する公共の場所、ビーチーパーク、公園、公営ゴルフ
コ−ス、公共リクリエーション施設では全面禁煙となり、喫煙行為はすべて禁止されている。
