Smoking Restriction in Hotels of the World

Smoking ban in hotels of the world 2006-2019

Marriott, Boston

In response to new information from the public health authorities overthe past few years regarding
the dangers of secondhand smoke, requests for non-smoking guest rooms have been on the rise.
Many smokers arealso in the habit of requesting smoke-free rooms, increasing the demand. Marriott,
Sheraton and Westin in North America already had 100 percent of its guest rooms designated as
non-smoking.

For hotels, the benefits outweigh the possible loss of bookings from smoking guests. Smoking rooms
incurred more costs for cleaning and repairs of burned furniture and carpeting. Furthermore, having
all rooms designated as non-smoking simplifies tracking available room inventory. Hotel chains continue
to decrease the ratio of smoking guest rooms to total. Now, most UK hotels are removing smoking
space from their facilities. The Choice hotel groups are completely smoke-free. They want to offer their
guest rooms free from a tobacco hazard and their employers a working environment in which prohibits
smoking. The choice has removed the opportunity to book from their web site. The demand for a
smoking guest room is almost zero.Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act has enforced that all guest rooms
in Taiwan's hotels should be entirely smoke-free. A separate booth for smoking, which has an independent
ventilation system, is allowed. The city of Boston prohibits put the light on tobacco in a hotel, which
includes to provide a smoking guest room in inns and hotels.

Marriott's brands include JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton. These changes to entirely to smoke inside,
are limited to the United States and Canada, since other countries view smoking differently. All Disney
owned resorts are non-smoking.However, a few hotels that cater to international travelers will continue
to offer smoking room.

Hotels face costs of converting to be non-smoking, as rooms must be deep-cleaned. USA Today reported
the Westin conversion came at a cost of $200 per room, due to cleaning, repairs and installation of new
air filters.

A partial smoking ban in a hotel does not protect guests from dangers of tobacco.

Hotels, that have the smoking and non-smoking rooms, do not adequately protect people from the dangers of
tobacco. That is the conclusion of a new San Diego State University study published in the Journal Tobacco
Control.

Researchers took air quality readings and tested surfaces for evidence of tobacco-smoke in a random sample
of San Diego hotel rooms. Ten hotels had complete smoking bans while 30 others had some dedicated non-
smoking rooms. Compared with hotels that prohibit smoking, hotels with only partial ban had higher surface
and air nicotine levels.

That was true even in the non-smoking rooms in hotels with a partial ban. Only five U.S. states, Indiana,
Michigan, North Dakota, Vermond and Wisconsin, require all motels and hotel rooms to be smoke free.
Four cities in California, including Santa Monica, have such a law. Researchers say guests who want to avoid
tobacco exposure should stay only in smoke-free hotels.

extended to hospitality venues, including hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants and long-distance trains.
