One of the wettest spots on earth, with an annual average rainfall of 11,700 mm,is located on the east side of
Mount Waialeale. The high annual rainfall has eroded deep valleys in the central mountains, carving out
canyons with many scenic waterfalls.

Makahuena Resort is all non-smoking. The following warning notice was posted in the hotel.
No smoking is allowed in any of our units!
Smoking inside will result in loss of a security deposit.

カウアィ島はハワイ諸島のなかでも最も北西に位置するリゾート地である。日本人観光客はほとんど見かけない。
代わりに欧米オセアニアからのゲストが多い。グランドキャニオンを小さくしたようなワイメア渓谷州立公園の他には
特記すべき場所もなく、海沿いのコンドミニアムを借りて時間をゆっくりと過ごすところがカウアィ島である。

ハワイ州コンドミニアム喫煙規制（カウアイ島）
建物および敷地内の喫煙規制はきびしい。Hanalei Colony Resort は全室禁煙で喫煙できる場所はビ−チと駐車場スペースに
限定され、テラスを含め、他の野外でも喫煙出来ない。日本のいくつかのウエブサイトにこのリゾートに喫煙ルームがあると
記載されているが明らかな間違いである。ハワイのビーチで喫煙出来ることには大きな疑問が残るが、筆者の見た限り、
タバコを吸う人もなく、ただの１本のタバコの吸い殻も認められていない。手つかずの美しい砂浜には喫煙者は立ち寄って
もらいたくない。喫煙している人には、最後の楽園ともいえるこの島への訪問を遠慮して欲しい。

Makahuena Resort 室内、敷地内ともに全面禁煙である。Resortのウエブサイトには次のような警告文が表示されている。
同様の文面はハワイ州の新禁煙法の解説とともに「ホテル客室内でも文書で喫煙するとクレジットから罰金（清掃費）を
引き落とす」旨注意喚起している。
