Whistler, B.C. Highway 99, also known as the Sea to Sky Highway, the Squamish Highway, Route 99, and/or Whistler Highway, is the major north-south artery running through the Greater Vancouver area of British Columbia from the U.S. border, listed as one of the best road trips in Canada. The Whistler Highway ( Route 99 ) provides an excellent view, which was now well improved for the Winter Olympic 2010. Whistler is located approximately 125 kms north of Vancouver. It has a permanent population of about 10,000, plus a larger but rotating "transient" population of workers, typically younger people from beyond BC, notably from Australia and Europe. Two million people visit Whistler annually, primarily for alpine skiing and mountain biking. (L) Snow-capped mountain peaks and the Cheakamus Lake (R) A Steller's Jay with a dark-blue wing Cheakamus Lake, which is located in the South of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada is the pristine area of Cheakamus Lake resting high up in the mountains at an elevation of over 900 m. The mountains towering around the lake stretch another 1600 m into the sky throwing reflections of snow-capped peaks back onto the lake. The easy grade, very well maintained hard earth trail leading to Cheakamus Lake is 3 kms in length. The trail wanders over wooden bridges spanning over creeks leading explorers through a swath of trees, cushioned with moss and deadfall. Cheakamus Lake It was in the summer of 1974. A narrow debouchment of the lake into a river stream was coved with a thick white snow, shinning with dazzling by sunlight. It was a very unforgettable memory. Thirty-seven years after, the writer did a second trial to this Cheakamus Lake.
