The main ring road, Route 1

The Skogafoss is one of the largest and beautiful waterfalls of Iceland, with a width of 25 meters and a drop
of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray, the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is
visible on sunny days.

Approaching Vik

The village of Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the main ring road, Route 1, and about
180km apart from Reykjavik. Despite its small size ( approx. 300 inhabitants ), it is an important staging
post and service center, thus it is indicated on road signs from a long distance away. A remarkable nearby
feature is the beautiful black beach of Reynisdrangar, and black-basalt columns sculptured by the sea.
The sea around Vik is rather wild and stormy and always wet. This beach is considered as one of the ten
most beautiful beaches on Earth.

The small promontory, Dyrholaey is located on the south coast of Iceland, not far from Vik. It is a former
island of volcanic origin.

スコーガフォスの滝は落差が６０メートルを越え、大量の水が一気に崖から落ちる雄大な滝である。その迫力は
すさまじい。滝の背面に続く細い小道があるが、岩だらけで非常に滑りやすい。霧のような水しぶきを浴びながら
くぐり抜ける。滝壺の右手の傾斜のきつい斜面に滝の上部に登る階段がある。

アイスランド島を環状にリンクしているルート１号線の重要な拠点にヴィックがある。人口は300人ほどだが、
ミールダルスヨークトル氷河( Myrdalsjokull Glacier )への基地として、ヴィック海岸の村として有名である。
レイキヤヴィクからは毎日２便の定期路線バスがある（ホプンまでは１日１便）。ルート１号線沿線には無数の
見所がある。

ディルホゥラエイ( Dyrholaey )はアイスランド本島の最南端の地である。海底火山の噴火によって形成された土地で、
突き出た絶壁近くにはいくつもの孤立岩がある。黒い砂の海岸は霧に包まれていることが多く、波の満ち引きは荒く
激しい。筆者らがこの地を訪れたときは溶岩で構成されているディルホゥラエイは深い霧に包まれ、車が海面に
伸びる砂利道をゆっくりと進むにつれ、海の上に少しずつ浮かび上がるように、白いベールの中に、真っ黒なその
姿を見せ始めた。そこには太古から少しも変わることのない、粗野で、美しい自然が残されていた。
