The city of Reykjavik


Reykjavik is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It is located in southwestern Iceland, one the southern
shore of Faxafloi Bay. The Greater Reykjavik Area has a population of 202,000, and is the heart of economic
and governmental activity of Iceland.

As a highly modernized capital of one of the most developed countries in the world, its inhabitants enjoy
a first-class welfare system and the city infrastructure. Itslocation, only slightly south of the Arctic Circle,
receives four hours of daylight on the shortest day in the depth of winter, during the summer the nights
are almost as bright as the days.


These vehicles are a delivery car, excursions car and ambulance car, which are actively using in Iceland.

Abundant water and volcanic activity in Iceland have provided most houses in Reykjavik,to use the geo-
thermal-heating system, which is the world largest. The huge hot water tanks of Perlan, which supply to
the Reykjavik Area, is connected by 50 km pipeline with the Nesjavellir Geothermal Power Plant. It is
located near the field of Pringvellir lava. The station produces about 120mw of electricity, and delivers
the amount of 1800 liters of hot water per second, servicing the Great Reykjavik Area.

アイスランドの首都レイキャヴィックの中心街はむしろ小さく、多くの観光名所が徒歩圏内にある。少し歩けば
そこにはコンドミニアムや一戸建ての家のある住宅街となる。色とりどりの屋根や色調を落とした建物の壁が
レイキャヴィック独特の風情を醸し出している。内装は北欧的なものが多く、シンプルで上品な雰囲気だ。

アイスランドでは使用される給湯や暖房などは地熱利用の地域システムによって賄っている。丘の上にひときわ
目立つドーム、ペルトランがその中心で、屋内と屋外には人工的な模擬ゲイシール（間欠泉）が５分間隔程度に
吹き上げている。熱水は50キロ離れたシンクヴェトリルの地熱発電所から運ばれて来ている。空気の汚れがない
のが、レイキャヴィック都市圏の特徴だ。

天然資源にも恵まれ、新鮮な魚介類が豊富である。アイスランドは捕鯨国としても有名である。レイキャヴィック
の港には沢山の漁船に加え、アイスランド国旗を船体に表示した巡視艇も浮かんでいる。港湾地域ではある程度の
防犯に心がける必要があるが、防波堤の壁にはユニークな落書きもある。

小高い丘に立つハットルグリムス教会は、プロテスタント系教会である。建物はコンクリート製で、完成は
1986年、現在、大幅な修復工事がなされている。 高さは74.5mで、アイスランドでは最も高い建造物である。
最上階まではエレベーターが通じており、360度、市内を見渡す展望台となっている。

市の西北端に灯台があり、公園となっている。ここからの海と山との眺めは格別だ。たまたま岩陰に何かを探して
いる狐のような猫に巡り会ったが、高級毛皮を羽織っているように、とても柔らかく、ふさふさしていた。多分、
その賢さと遊び好きで知られるメインクーン ( Maine Coon )と思われるが、暑さのない都市に暮らす猫にとって
住み心地はきっとよいだろう。筆者に体をすりつけていた猫はやがて岩間に消えて行った。


追伸：
筆者はその後、メインクーンの魅力を忘れることが出来ず、今、猫は家族の一員となって生活している。
