Akureyri is a town in the northern part of Iceland. In terms of population, it is the second largest urban
area after the Great Reykjavik area. Akureyri has a population of 17,000, and is nicknamed the 'Capital
of North Iceland'. Husavik is a small town in the north of Iceland on the shores of Skjafandi bay. It has
become the tourist base for whale watching.

アークレイリは、レイキャビック首都圏の次に人口が多いが、その数は約18,000 人。世界最大級の漁獲物の
加工場があり、エイヤフィヨルズルというフィヨルドの最も奥に位置し、天然の良港に恵まれている。アイス
ランドを環状に走る国道1号線（リングロード）が市内を貫いている。アークレーはまた、アイスランド北部の
重要な観光基地としての役割を果たしている。背後に雪山を抱え、スイスの高原都市のようなたたずまいがある。
グリーンランドからの寒流とメキシコ湾を起点とする暖流との交差する地域で、冬の平均気温が0℃以下となる
ことは少なく、夏、７月の平均気温は12℃と、晴れていれば湿気もなく、とてもさわやかだ。フーサヴィックは
スキャゥルファンディ湾（Skjalfandi Bay ) の東岸に位置し、漁業及び魚の加工業が盛んなアイスランド北岸の
港町で鯨観察の観光船はここから出る。

町外れにあるロッジは母親と娘との家族経営である（全館禁煙）。宿泊料金は一流ホテル以上だが、シーツなどは
一切セットされてなく、すべてセルフサービス、ロッジ内外には小蠅が多く、ゆっくり食事さえ出来ない。しかし、
朝夕のグリーンランド海の入り江の風景は正に神秘的で絶妙である。アイスランドでも最も美しい光景の一つとも
言えよう。
