日本による台湾統治は50年の年月にもおよび、その過程で日本文化が流入すると共に、各種鉄道網の整備や烏山頭
ダム（1930年に竣工した台湾最大の水利事業）と日月潭ダムの建設など社会インフラの近代化が行われた。更に
太平洋戦争中は台湾総督府が主導する皇民化運動が推進され、日本語の普及や、日本姓への改姓、台湾神社など
66に及ぶ日本の神社の建立等を通じて日本文化が台湾人の家庭に定着するようになった。
台鉄（台湾の国鉄）の自動改札機はJRと全く変わらない。オムロン製が導入されているようで、駅構内の様子や
プラットフォームは日本とほとんど変わらない。台湾内の鉄道は日本統治時代に多くの路線が建設されており、日本人
建築家がデザインした古い駅舎が残っている場合もある。道路は右側通行で、右ハンドルの自動車は登録出来ないが、
鉄道は日本と全く同じ左側通行である。アメリカ発祥のコンビニエンスストア「セブンイレブン」はアメリカでの
経営悪化により1993年に日本のイトーヨーカ堂に買収されており、台湾を含め、世界各国にある「セブンイレブン」
は日本式の営業・販売形態を取っている。
日本語は現在でも台湾の社会において使用されており中国大陸との漢字の差を生じている。その例を挙げれば
（括弧内は大陸での表記）、日本語での漢字表記が定着した弁当（飯盒）、刺身（生魚片）、看板（招牌）、
注文（預定）、気持（きもちと発音、心情）、日本語の発音を音訳（括弧内日本語）した甜不辣（天婦羅）、
黒輪（おでん）などがある。台湾の著名寺院である龍山寺には日本語で話しかける高齢者のたまり場となっている。
鉄道の駅でも上手な日本語で話しかけてくる人もいる。
飲食店では「日式」の文字が目立つ。「日本製」なる言葉は絶大な信頼性を勝ち取る。和菓子や日本から輸入した
チョコレートなどがブランド店で販売されている。おいしい日本のりんごやミカンは著名スーパーで山積みされて
いる。台湾高速鉄道台中駅や台北駅の飲食店街では日本で展開しているチェーン店が幅を利かせている。台北駅構
内には東急ハンズや無印良品の出店がある。

The culture of Taiwan is a blend of Confucianist Han Chinese and Taiwanese
aborigine's cultures, which are
often perceived in both traditional and modern understandings. The common
socio-political experience in
Taiwan gradually developed into a sense of cultural-identity and a feeling
of cultural -awareness, which has
been widely debated domestically. Reflecting the continuing controversy
surrounding the political status of
Taiwan, politics continued to play a role in the conception and development
of a domestic cultural identity,
especially in the prior dominant frame of a Taiwanese and Chinese dualism.
When the Treaty of Shimonoseki was finalized in April 1895, Taiwan was
ceded by the Qing Empire to Japan.
The governanceof Taiwan by Japan has been continued for 50 years. Japanese
culture has flowered in the
process, and development of various railway networks such as sugar railway,
salt railway, mining industry
railroad, forestry railroad, and construction of Jia Nan Denzen and Sun
Moon lake dam. During the Pacific War,
the empowerment campaign led by Governor General of Taiwan was promoted,
and Nipponese culture
became established in Taiwanese families through dissemination of Japanese,
rename to last name in
Japanese.
