The Tranz Alpine Train

The Tranz Alpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of
New Zealand to the other. The train passes through the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the
Waimakariri River. The train then climbs into the Southern Alps before descending through lush beech
rain forest to West Coast town of Greymouth,a base town for visits to the always popular glaciers.

The Tranz Alpine Train departs from Christchurch and Greymouth daily. The distance is 223.8 kilometers
long and a trip takes just four and a half hours. During the trip course, there are 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts.

A snack car provides tasty sandwiches, tea and coffee.
　
A terminal station, Greymouth on the northwest shore of the South Island, is very small.
Only one station personal was working, selling a railway ticket and souvenir.

(L)Tranz Alpine train en route back to Christchurch accelerated the train speed, along a broad valley flanked by
misty mountains, crossing and again crossing the Waimakariri River several times.

鉄道 TRANZ ALPINE SCENICの旅

かつてニュージランド全土を網羅していた鉄道のほとんどは貨物専用となり、現在旅客を乗せて運行しているのは、
クライストチャーチから南島の背骨、サザンアルプスを横断し西海岸、グレーマウスまでの山岳路線の
１往復と、クライストチャーチから南島北端のピクトンまでの海岸路線の１往復がある。

クライストチャーチからサザンアルプス（南島の背骨）を横断し西海岸、グレーマウスまでの山岳路線は人気がある。
筆者が利用した日もほぼ満席に近かった。中国人団体が二つの車両を占有していた。日本人団体客は20人ほどで
あったが、全員、山脈の北東に位置する麓の寒村、アーサーズパスで下車した。

鉄道路線の大部分はState Highway に沿っているが、スプリングスフィールドからアーサ−ズパスまでは鉄道独自の
ルートを走る。この区間には渓谷あり、白雪を抱いた山々ありと、次々に変化して行くすばらしい景観が売り物だ。
世界５大観光列車の一つとも言われている。1923年にアーサ−ズパスとオティラ間に開通した長さ8500メートル
のトンネルが、南島東海岸と西海岸とを結ぶ重要な鉄路としての地位を固めた。
